This shopping basket is traditional to the Perigord region of France - the Pannier perigourdain. The initial plait has five elements and uses 5 foot weavers. Initially round, like the laundry basket, a handle turns it into an oval shopper. Designed to be carried on the arm and supported on the hip, the handle is low so that the hand can grasp the rim.
